Alexander Ramm
An outstanding Russian cellist. Winner of the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition. One of the most gifted and sought-after Russian cellists. His performances draw full houses throughout Russia and in many countries around the world. In June 2023, Alexander was honoured to be invited as a jury member for the XVII International Tchaikovsky Competition, becoming one of the youngest judges in the competition’s history. He is a laureate of the Russian Federation President’s Award for Young Cultural Figures «For Contribution to the Development of Domestic Musical Art and Educational Activities» (2024).
Alexander’s performances are regularly broadcast on the Kultura (Russia-K) channel and Medici.TV. The recording of his performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony-Concerto with the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Valery Gergiev was recorded and regularly repeated by the French television channel Mezzo. Over the years, the musician has collaborated with conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Vladimir Spivakov, Vladimir Yurovsky, Vasily Petrenko, Nikolai Alekseev, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Yuri Bashmet, Mikhail Yurovsky, Alexander Sladkovsky, Dmitry Yurovsky, Stanislav Kochanovsky and Alexander Lazarev. Alexander’s regular stage partners include Denis Matsuev, Vadim Repin, Nikolai Lugansky, Sergei Krylov, Alexander Gindin, Pavel Milyukov, and Philip Kopachevsky.
Alexander Ramm’s cello can be heard in the world’s leading concert halls, including the Paris Philharmonie, Cadogan Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Brucknerhaus in Linz, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Metropolitan and Musashino Shimin in Tokyo, and other concert venues in cities in Russia, Lithuania, Sweden, Austria, Korea, Finland, South Africa, Japan, France, Bulgaria, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Alexander considers one of the most important aspects of his work to be performing in places where people have limited access to high art and philharmonic life, and therefore he has regularly travelled for many years to play in cities such as Bratsk, Nizhneudinsk, Stary Oskol, Angarsk, etc. The musician is a soloist with the St. Petersburg House of Music and the Moscow Philharmonic.
Alexander is the winner of the silver medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition (2015) and many other music competitions, including the International Cello Competition in Beijing and the First All-Russian Music Competition (2010). Alexander Ramm is currently the first and only Russian to have won one of the most prestigious cello competitions, the Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki (2013).
